This Pollinator Garden Project is an extension of Artemis Garden’s mission to create sustainable, low-maintenance gardens that highlight local and native plants.
Hellbent Brewing Company
Design
In 2016, the front of the building was little more than a weed patch with some scrawny rhododendrons and poor soil. We rototilled wood chips into the soil with nitrogen fertilizer, and then “sheet mulched” the whole area with cardboard topped with a layer of compost that was blown in by a blower truck. After six months, the weeds were smothered out of existence, the earthworms had improved the soil while breaking down the cardboard, and we were able to install the design, which features native plants, rocks and a path to emulate a walk in the local mountains.
Chaney Garden
Design
After sheet-mulching the front lawn at the Ballard neighborhood residence, we created a colorful, low-maintenance garden using Azaleas, Sunroses, Fuchsias, plus thyme groundcovers and gravel paths.
In the back, a decorative cement path and a blend of shade-loving plant creates an oasis with textures and contrasts.
Go Natives Nursery Display Garden Project
Design
In 2018, Don Norman, owner of Go Natives Nursery in Shoreline, WA., asked Artemis Gardens to create a master plan to show how natives can work in a variety of micro-habitats, while consolidating the sales areas for a more enjoyable visitor experience. The first phase included a Garry Oak meadow and a full-sun rock garden. In 2022, the next phase features drought-tolerant shrubs and trees for a sunny, south-facing slope. In addition, we have created a bog and raingarden that is fed by cisterns.
